My Life, My Health (Chronic Disease Self-Management)
This workshop was developed by researchers at Stanford University Medical Center and is designed for adults who are living with the challenges of one or more ongoing health conditions, or for people living with or caring for someone with an ongoing health condition. Participants learn techniques to help take control of their health and life, including healthy eating and exercise, how to deal with difficult emotions, stress, depression, and pain, relaxation techniques, fall prevention, the importance of sleep, how to make difficult decisions and communicate better with their doctor, family, and friends, how to keep track of medications, evaluate treatments, and plan for the future.
This workshop is for people with diabetes, pre-diabetes, or for people living with or caring for someone with diabetes. You will learn how to care for yourself and to prevent or delay the complications of diabetes. The emphasis is on healthy eating, meal planning, and physical exercise. Other topics include blood sugar monitoring and dealing with low blood sugar, foot care, how to deal with difficult emotions, stress, and depression, relaxation techniques, how to communicate better with your doctor, family and friends, keeping track of medications, and planning for the future. You will receive a copy of the book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.
Chronic Pain Self-Management
This interactive workshop was developed by Stanford University. As a participant you will learn: Techniques to deal with frustration, fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep. Exercises to maintain or improve strength, flexibility, and endurance. About appropriate use of medications. To better communicate with family, friends, and health professionals. Strategies on healthy eating and nutrition. How to better pace activity and rest. How to evaluate new treatments. This workshop will help you increase confidence in your ability to manage your chronic pain. Sessions are held once a week for six weeks for 2 1/2 hours each.
A Matter of Balance
An eight session workshop that acknowledges the risk of falling but emphasizes practical coping strategies to reduce this fear. These strategies include promoting a view of falls and fear of falling as controllable, setting realistic goals for increasing activity, changing the environment to reduce fall risk factors, and promoting exercise to increase strength and balance. The workshop is conducted over eight sessions, meeting weekly for two hours per session.
Powerful Tools for Caregivers
Is living with the stress of caregiving preventing you from really living? In the six weekly classes, adults facing the unique challenges of being a caregiver will develop a wealth of self-care tools to reduce personal stress, change negative self-talk, communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers, communicate more effectively in challenging situations, recognize the messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings, and make tough caregiving decisions. Learn to thrive and not just survive while caring for a family member or friend!
Healthy Eating for Successful Living
Learn, have fun, and improve your health at the same time. This program is for adults who want to learn more about how nutrition and lifestyle changes can promote better health. The USDA’s MyPlate is used as a framework and classes provide recommendations for combining good nutrition with physical activity. We cover healthy choices in each of the food groups, appropriate portion sizes, and how to read nutrition labels. The class includes a field trip to a grocery store and concludes with the class working together to plan, cook, and enjoy a healthy meal together. Each participant will receive a participant manual and your own individualized MyPlate healthy eating plan.
