SPRINGWELL AS AN AREA AGENCY ON AGING

The U.S. Administration for Community Living (the ACL, formerly the Administration on Aging) has developed a nationwide network of State and local Area Agencies on Aging to plan, coordinate and develop community-level systems of services that meet the unique needs of individual older persons and their caregivers. In Massachusetts, the State Unit on Aging is the Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA). Elder Affairs oversees and coordinates the efforts of the 22 local Area Agencies on Aging statewide.

AREA PLAN ON AGING

As an Area Agency on Aging (AAA), Springwell works to heighten awareness among other agencies, organizations, groups and the public about the needs of older people, and to educate older people and their caregivers about the benefits and services available to help them. Springwell endeavors to address the needs of all seniors and family caregivers in our area. We make special efforts to reach and prioritize the delivery of services to the following populations:

  • Elders who Live Alone (Isolated)
  • Low Income Elders
  • Minority Elder Populations
  • Socially Isolated Populations (including limited English-proficient elders and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elders).

We do this by advocating for seniors, family caregivers and their concerns, directly providing some services such as nutrition and in-home services, and ensuring that other critical services such as transportation and legal advice
are available through contracts with and grants to other agencies.

GROWING SERVICE AREA

As a part of the recent merger of Baypath and Springwell, we now serve the following cities and towns: Ashland, Belmont, Brookline, Dover, Framingham, Holliston, Hopkinton, Hudson, Marlborough, Natick, Needham, Newton, Northborough, Sherborn, Southborough, Sudbury, Waltham, Watertown, Wayland, Wellesley, Westborough, and Weston. As a federally-designated Area Agency on Aging, Springwell is charged with creating a published plan for our areas, to address the needs of seniors; and ensuring that service needs identified in the plan are provided.
