Pride Month commemorates the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, widely considered the start of the modern global LGBTQIA+ civil rights movement, and celebrates the achievements, diversity, authenticity, and resilience of the rainbow community.  LGBTQIA+ older adults have lived through and helped create periods of immense social change, witnessing both progress and setbacks in their journey towards equality.  Historically confronting discrimination, stigma, and exclusion, this community now may encounter additional challenges as they age, such as isolation amid limited support networks, health disparities, and a lack of culturally competent services. It is crucial for us to recognize and address their unique experiences, ensuring that LGBTQIA+ older adults can age with dignity, respect, welcoming community, and access to the support they deserve.

Springwell’s LGBTQIA+ Initiative has staff available to answer questions, provide information and referrals, and offer programs and events for LGBTQIA+ older adults, their family members, and allies, as well as trainings for local professionals in greater Boston and MetroWest. We strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all of these individuals by working closely with community partners, volunteers, and caregivers, and are always seeking to better understand needs and collaborate on innovative solutions to bridge existing gaps in services.

Springwell has also been helping to create OUTstandingLife, a virtual gathering space for LGBTQIA+ older adults, which is the rainbow senior-community center of Massaschusetts that now offers a host of free programs, classes and workshops via Zoom.  Find out more and check out the latest programs added to a robust summer schedule at www.OUTstandingLife.org.
